City searches for Emerald Park Playground design input

The city is in the early stages of designing the new playground at Emerald Park. It will host two open house sessions for public input on the project's design. The open houses will run 5-6:30 p.m. on March 19 and April 30 at the Howelsen Ice Arena community room.

The city is searching for community input on desired features and functionality for the new Emerald Park Playground design.

“As we know, playgrounds are hands-on spaces that promote physical activity, improve motor skills, spark learning, develop social interaction and serve as gathering spots for the community across generations,” said Deputy Parks & Recreation Director-Land Management Stephanie Munro, in a news release. “We want the new space to be something everyone enjoys and are seeking your involvement in the process.”

This project will be the city’s largest playground replacement to date, including site improvements, wayfinding and new amenities. The area will expand on the existing playground footprint, introducing more play features, seating spaces, shaded structures and upgraded amenities to enhance the user experience.

As part of the planning and design process, two open houses have been planned to gather input and feedback on the project. Open houses are scheduled from 5-6:30 p.m. on March 19 and April 30 at the Howelsen Ice Arena community room.

Designs will be finalized over the summer with construction efforts scheduled for this fall and an anticipated completion date for summer 2026.

According to the release, concepts will look to blend three elements — destination play (whimsical, creative play environments to spark multi-generational play), discovery landscapes (innovative play and learning spaces) and irrigation design (water conservation and ease of maintenance) into the overall project.

The existing playground was installed mostly in-house in 1999 with financial support from Great Outdoors Colorado. City staff believe it has “significantly outlived its lifespan,” calling for a more modern and inclusive space for all age groups and abilities.

The existing boulders will be integrated into the design and surrounding site improvements. In addition, new wayfinding will help navigation at Emerald Park, for more clear access to amenities, sport fields, the botanic park and core trail.

The city is teaming with Design Concepts, an award-winning landscape architectural planning and design firm founded in 1981. Design Concepts is a Colorado-based firm.
