City of Steamboat Springs warns water customers about costs of frozen meters

— The city of Steamboat Springs is advising residents to take measures to protect their water meters from freezing or bear the cost of replacing a broken one.

“City water customers (owners, tenants, occupants) are responsible for protecting the water meter that serves their property from freezing,” city staff wrote in a news release. “If a water meter freezes, the cost to remove, replace and install a new meter is the responsibility of the property owner or tenant.”

According to the city, a new 0.75-inch meter will cost $195 to replace, and a 1-inch meter will cost $250.



The city last year launched a $1 million project to replace all of its 3,200 water meters with new meters that are able to transmit readings electronically without a visit from a meter reader.
