City housekeeping measure passed

Christine Metz

Voters overwhelming supported a city housekeeping item that would coordinate the city’s November election date with the TABOR Amendment.

With all precincts reporting, Steamboat Springs’ voters passed 2B, 2,980-1,948.

The ballot issue asked voters to approve amending the city’s home rule charter to change the date of municipal elections, which are held in odd-numbered years. Instead of holding them on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, the voters approved holding them on the first Tuesday in November.

With the old system, the city and county would have held elections on separate days. The approved change will allow the city to coordinate its elections with the county.

“It is definitely a savings to the taxpayer,” City Clerk Julie Jordan said. “Coordinated elections are a great practice that the city and county can participate in.”

The city’s dates also conflicted with the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, which requires that ballot issues concerning fiscal matters be submitted to the voters only on specified election dates, one of which is the first Tuesday in November of odd-numbered years.

The city’s charter had prohibited elections from being held on the first day of November. The election days are spelled out in the city’s charter, and any amendment to the charter has to be approved through a vote of the people.
