City announces July Fourth road closures, bus schedule

In preparation for festivities surrounding Steamboat Springs’ July Fourth celebration, the city of Steamboat Springs has announced several road closures.

Lincoln Avenue and Yampa Street, as well as side streets between Fifth and 11th streets, will be closed from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. The parade runs from 10 a.m. to noon, and the city encourages people to walk, bike or take the free transit bus, which will see additional buses running before the parade. If driving, additional parking is available at the Steamboat Springs High School or at the Stockbridge Transit Center 

Eighth Street from Lincoln to Pine streets will be closed from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday for the Ski Town Lions Club pancake breakfast. An hour later, Eighth Street between Oak and Pine streets in front of the Tread of Pioneers Museum will be closed for the annual Pioneers Block Party, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Steamboat Springs Transit Service will operate additional service during the Fourth of July parade. Extra, unscheduled buses will run during the day, and while Lincoln Avenue is closed, buses will use the Oak Street detour.

Temporary bus stops will be located at Fifth and Oak, Seventh and Oak and Ninth and Oak streets. Buses will also stop at the Yellow Line’s 10th and Oak stop, next to City Hall. Once Lincoln reopens, buses will return to their normal routes.

Buses depart the Stockbridge Center at :00, :20 and :40 past the hour headed toward town and the mountain. Buses will pick up at Seventh and Lincoln at :04, :24 and :44 past the hour until the final scheduled departure at 10:44 p.m. Buses will depart continuously from downtown toward the mountain and west end until the crowds are dispersed from downtown locations.

Downtown parking is on-street, in several parking lots as well as at the Steamboat Springs High School and the Stockbridge Transit Center. The city is asking motorists to respect residential access and not block driveways.

Yampa Valley Crane Festival registration open online

Registration for the 2017 Yampa Valley Crane Festival, which will be held Aug. 31 to Sept. 3, is open. To register and view the full festival schedule, go to

Many events for the four-day festival are free and do not require registration. Some events with limited space will require advance registration and a nominal fee.  These events are noted in the schedule. Be sure to register early as these events fill quickly.

Registration is not required for all speaker presentations, films, sketch-a-bird workshop, HawkQuest Raptor Booth, educational displays, crane art walk, crane yoga, crane story-telling and the Carpenter Ranch. Registration is required for all shuttles for guided crane viewing, birding by pontoon boat, beer, wine and cheese reception and gallery show, guided bird walks, family activity night, nature-writing workshop, wildlife photography workshop, guided nature walk and gondola ride on the Steamboat Ski Mountain, shuttles to the Carpenter Ranch and purchase of a picnic dinner at the Carpenter Ranch event.
