Chris Kipfer: Big government can sometimes be a blessing
December 27, 2018
I was born in the same year as the formation of the FDR New Deal “Rural Electrification Act” of 1936, enacted on May 20, 1936. It provided federal loans for the installation of electrical distribution systems to serve rural areas of the United States and gave loans to farmers to electrify our farms and form electric coops like our Yampa Valley Electric Association.
Without this government assistance, rural electrification would have come at a much slower pace. I can remember the kerosene lamps and cooking on the kitchen range in winter and kerosene burners in the summer. I just thought that it might be good for all of us to understand that big government can sometimes be a blessing to rural America.
