Chix take third at state tournament

— The Chix with Stix women’s hockey team placed third at the Women’s Association of Colo–rado Hockey state tournament.

The Steamboat women’s hockey team was seeded fifth heading into the division B1 tournament, held April 7 to 9 at Apex Arena in Denver.

The University of Denver defeated the Silverwolves from Colorado Springs in the championship game.

Steamboat finished 3-2 in the tournament, defeating the Cliffhangers from Boulder, 2-1, in the consolation final. Steamboat’s Jen Travis and Diane Dwire scored the goals in the game. Maggie Adams had two assists.

Steamboat opened the tournament with a 4-2 win against Colorado College on April 7. Lynne Bosley, Sue Heineke, Dwire and Heidi Chapman-Hoy netted goals in the win. Adams, Holly Curtiss and Dwire also had assists.

Steamboat dropped its second game, 4-2, to the Silverwolves. Riley Polumbus and Curtiss scored for the Chix. Heineke and Lisa Owen had assists.

In Steamboat’s final pool game, held April 8, the Chix downed the Clash from Denver, 2-0, to advance to the semifinal. Carly Helm and Polumbus scored for the Chix. Travis and Curtiss were credited with assists.

The Chix fell to DU in the semifinal, 3-1, setting up the game against the Cliffhangers on April 9.

During the weekend, the Chix killed three 5-on-3 situations and allowed just one power play goal while scoring two short-handed goals.
