Chix split series vs. ‘Wolves
Steamboat Springs — The Chix with Stix picked up its third win of the season Satur–day against the Silverwolves of Colorado Springs.
Playing in the B1 division of the Women’s Association of Colorado Hockey, Steamboat got back in the win column after starting the season off strong.
The Chix scored the first goal of Saturday’s game 6 minutes, 10 seconds into the first period off the stick of center Cathy Wiedemer.
Wingers Riley Polumbus and Heidi Chapman-Hoy were given the assists.
“I wasn’t camped out in front,” Wiedemer said. “I was out a ways, which is what I’ve been working on because you have so many more options.”
After dumping the puck into the zone, Polumbus and Chapman-Hoy worked the puck out of the corner to Wiedemer for the goal.
Steamboat added its second goal with 31 seconds left in the second period, when defenseman Diane Dwire found the back of the net. Polumbus was given her second assist.
Colorado Springs scored twice in the third period, tying the game at 2-2. With 4:24 remaining, Lisa Owen drew a tripping penalty on the Silverwolves, giving the Chix a power play. Defenseman Jen Rose scored the game-winning goal on the power play.
“That’s what we’ve been working on, getting it out to the point,” Wiedemer said. “She took a beautiful shot into the five-hole.”
The Silverwolves pulled their goalie in the final minute but did not score.
Steamboat’s goalie Nikki Knoe–bel stopped 24 shots, and the Chix put 27 shots on net.
Colorado Springs came back Sunday and defeated Steamboat, 5-2. The Silverwolves scored first, but the Chix tied the game on a goal from Polumbus and an assist from Rose.
Colorado Springs scored two unanswered goals in the second period, building a 3-1 lead. They added two more goals in the final period before the Chix got on the board for the final time off Dwire’s goal. Owen was given the assist.
Steamboat goalie Kit Rice stopped 15 shots, and Colorado Springs’ goalie turned away 22 shots.
Up next for the Chix is a game Saturday against the Left Hand Brewsers at the Sun Microsystems Ice Center in Westminster.
The Chix teamed up with the Brewsers to win a tournament in Colorado Springs earlier this season. The two teams will pair up again for a tournament from Jan. 26 to 29 in Las Vegas.
