Chix on win streak heading to state

The Chix with Stix women’s hockey team picked up its fifth straight win with a one-goal victory against the Left Hand Brewery Brewsers on Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena.

The Chix defeated the Brewsers, 2-1, behind goalie KC Amon’s 12 saves on the 13 shots she faced.

Steamboat, meanwhile, had 22 shots on goal, as both teams did all their offensive damage in the first period of Saturday night’s game.

The Brewsers scored the game’s first goal at full strength, nine minutes into the first period.

Cathy Wiedemer evened the score for Steamboat at the 8:20 mark off an assist from Val Dietrich. Sheila Henderson scored the game-winning goal for the Chix at 3:31. Sue Heineke was credited with the assist.

Steamboat returns to the ice April 2 to 4 in Vail for the state tournament. Each team in the tournament is guaranteed four games and will play a series of pool games and then be re-ranked based upon pool play finish.

Joining Steamboat in its pool are the Colorado Synergy, Vail Breakaways and the Breckenridge Blizzard. The Aspen MotherPuckers, Denver Bandits, CU and Fort Collins Flames are in the other pool.
