Chili galore at North Routt cook-off Sunday
Steamboat Springs — North Routt County is the place to be Sunday for chili enthusiasts.
The famed 13th Annual Great North Routt Chili Cook Off will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Hahn’s Peak Roadhouse on Routt County Road 129 near Steamboat Lake.
Those planning on attending are encouraged to arrive early if they want to taste all the chilis.
“It does go fast because everyone likes to sample every little bit,” organizer Kerri Ann Crocker said. “When you go to the chili cook off, you’re not going to go away hungry.”
Crocker is director of the North Routt Preschool. The event is a fundraiser for the preschool and the North Routt Community Charter School.
The cost to attend is $15. Children under seven eat free, and the maximum cost for a family is $45. The cost to enter a chili, green chili, soup or dessert is $10, and that cost includes entry.
Entrants should drop off six quarts or more of food by 12:30 p.m. and should bring their own crock pots, power cords and ladles.
Those who attend will vote on the winners. First place winners will receive gift certificates to North Routt restaurants.
New this year is a silent auction for artwork done by students.
“We thought it was a fun way to show off the kids’ work,” Crocker said.
Crocker said the goal of the event is to bring community and school community members together.
Typically between 150 and 200 people attend.
“It’s something that a lot of people really look forward to,” Crocker said.
