Cheyenne Mountain beats boys lax, 13-4

No one player is going to turn things around. It’s going to take the team.

That’s the message Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse coach Jay Lattimore was preaching Saturday after his Sailors lost to another of the state’s best teams.

Steamboat fell against Cheyenne Mountain, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A by ChssaNow.com, on Saturday, losing on the road, 13-4.

“We have to get our offense working more as a team,” Lattimore said. “We need to be getting more looks. We’ve seen it from Aspen and Cheyenne Mountain. We’ve seen how their offenses are able to run, and hopefully, we can take a bit of what we’ve seen and put it together.”

The loss drops Steamboat to 6-5 on the season.

The Sailors have shown this season they’re still a big step ahead of many programs, but they haven’t been able to match up against elite squads.

Saturday, the team got three goals from Andrew Firestone and a goal and two assists from Jackson Draper.

Cheyenne Mountain controlled much of the game, however, possessing the ball for long periods.

“We have the skill to play with all of these teams,” Steamboat’s Joe Deline said. “We just have to show it. We have to work together to achieve what we want.”

The Sailors will get another chance to do just that at 4 p.m. Tuesday playing at home against Grand Junction.
