Cherry Creek rips Steamboat with big 2nd period

— After a scoreless first period for both sides, Steamboat Springs High School endured a brutal second period at state-ranked Cherry Creek en route to an 11-2 loss on the road.

The Sailors went nearly shot-for-shot with the Bruins in the opening 17 minutes, but Cherry Creek quickly showed why it is widely expected to go deep into the championship playoffs. The Bruins ripped off eight goals on 18 shots in the period. Steamboat managed just four shots.

Grant McNamara finally got the Sailors on the board in the final period, sliding one in off a Harry Wilson assist. Peter Wharton closed the game’s scoring with a goal of his own inside two minutes from an Andrew Mitchell assist.

Steamboat (2-15) will stay on the Front Range overnight for Saturday’s game at Columbine. The Rebels have lost five of their last six contests. The puck drops at 6:15 p.m.
