Charity shoot on target

Routt County Rifle Club hosts breast cancer fund-raiser

Melinda Mawdsley

Holly Rogers has never held a gun before, but she figures the upcoming Women’s Charity Shoot is an ideal first time.

For the fifth straight year, the Routt County Rifle Club is hosting the charity shoot. For the second year, funds raised from the shoot will be given to the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project, which serves women in Routt and Moffat counties.

Rogers serves on the YVBCAP committee and said the efforts of the local rifle range and the Women’s Recreational Shooting Association are greatly appreciated.

“I think it’s an incredibly unique fund-raiser,” Rogers said. “I think I’m going to try to shoot. I’ve never even held a gun. My husband keeps encouraging me.”

The Women’s Charity Shoot originated in Boulder and was started by a female gynecologist who wanted to raise money for breast cancer. When the shoot moved to Steamboat Springs five years ago, everyone associated wanted to continue raising money for breast cancer awareness, prevention and treatment.

“Women like to raise money for other women,” organizer Lorna Farrow said.

Rogers said the YVBCAP helps women in Northwest Colorado who may not be able to cover the costs of mammograms, diagnostic testing or travel expenses to the Front Range for treatment.

“The funds are for people who are outside the system who need help,” Rogers said. “We are trying to get the word out.”

The Women’s Charity Shoot is June 5, and women who register before May 15 will be entered into a special drawing.

The registration fee for women older than 20 is $60. The cost for a junior (12-20) is $40. Women who are members of the National Rifle Association receive a $5 discount.

The registration fee includes access to loaner firearms (no outside firearms are allowed), targets, ammunition, a catered lunch, trophies, entrance into a prize drawing and a Women on Target goodie bag.

In conjunction with the Women’s Charity Shoot, free instructional classes are being offered June 4, the day before the event, to introduce women to the firearms being used.

A Couples Fun Shoot also is being held June 6. The cost to enter is $70 per couple and includes lunch, trophies, drawings and loaner firearms, targets and ammunition.
