Recent graduate buys Hayden hair salon; Mexican restaurant opens bakery

— Two businesses are going through some changes on Hayden’s Jefferson Avenue.

Kustom Kuts is headed for the hands of a new owner and Quintero’s Mexican Restaurant has opened a bakery.

Shandal Stees is taking over the Kustom Kuts hair salon from Alice Carroll. Stees, 20, finished training in September at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Craig and has been working in the salon since November.

“I guess I’ve always wanted to own my own beauty salon,” Stees said. “I just didn’t think it would happen this soon.”

Stees is a bit nervous but will get help from her mother, Margaret Stees, who owns the Nail Wizard in Steamboat Springs. Shandal Stees’ father used stocks to help her buy the salon. Her customers have said they would be faithful.

“Everybody said they would just keep coming to me and give me a try, so that’s good,” Stees said. She said she won’t change the name but eventually wants to change the decor and make the salon her own.

Carroll is moving to Greeley, Stees said.

A few blocks east of Kustom Kuts, Quintero’s is doing bustling morning business with its new bakery, Yara Quintero said. The bakery opens daily at 6 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. every day except Sunday, when it closes at 2 p.m.

The bakery opened May 24. It offers Mexican pastries, breads, cakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies and other goodies. The bakery area also serves coffee, juice and sometimes breakfast burritos in the morning, Quintero said.

“In the morning, since 6 o’clock, it’s always busy until 8,” she said.

Like the restaurant, Quintero said, the bakery uses almost entirely fresh ingredients.

Most small bakery items cost less than $1. The cakes range from $25 to $100, depending on the size and the fillings.

So far, business has been solid, Quintero said.

“Normally, by 5, we’re out of bread already – and we don’t close until 7,” she said. “It’s hard to keep up with the customers. Hopefully, we’ll have more bread than customers next time.”
