— The Hayden Chamber of Commerce conducted ribbon-cutting ceremonies Thursday for three recently opened businesses, a sign of the continuing growth in the West Routt County town and the success of its revamped Chamber.

The business owners cut red ribbons strung across their storefronts and accepted plaques honoring their first dollars of sale at GG’s Coffee Shop, A Taste of Colorado and Thistle Dew Salon.

Chamber of Commerce board member Donna Hellyer said the ribbon-cuttings help keep everyone in town excited about business growth and revitalizing vacant buildings downtown.

“The enthusiasm keeps everyone on top of things, and keeps us going forward with the right kind of growth,” Hellyer said.

Chamber members are excited about the town’s potential growth. Businesses currently considering Hayden as their home include two restaurants and an artists’ cooperative on historic Walnut Street.

The artists’ cooperative would be a small business where a number of local artisans and craftspeople could sell their wares while sharing rent and maintenance costs. The cooperative would help those who have been hesitant to open their own store because they cannot afford the rent or would have difficulty maintaining full business hours, Hellyer said.

Chamber officials say they want the town to grow in a self-sustaining way while maintaining its character and keeping out “big box” retailers, said Judy Guerin, owner of the Thistle Dew Salon and a Chamber of Commerce board member.

“Yes, we have to grow and want to grow, but we want a community where you still know your neighbors,” Hellyer said.

The Chamber was restarted this summer after being dormant for a period of time, and has grown rapidly since.

“We’ve had awesome support. Our membership has gone from below 20 to more than 60 members,” Guerin said. “It’s really quite an accomplishment for Hayden.”
