Central thumps Sailors on the road
Steamboat Springs — Big plays did the Steamboat Springs High School football team in Saturday night during a road trip to play at Grand Junction Central.
The Sailors couldn’t keep up, falling 42-0.
“We just have a very tough league,” Steamboat coach Lonn Clementson said. “We knew we would have to eliminate some big plays. We got some stops, and we were able to move it some on offense, but we weren’t able to get the ball into the end zone.”
Steamboat got an early turnover and was stout on defense, keeping the Warriors out of the end zone into the second quarter. Things changed in a hurry, however, and Central packed four touchdowns into that quarter, taking a 26-0 lead into halftime.
“We had some miscues, but the kids were playing hard,” Clementson said. “Our kids played hard throughout the game, and I was proud about that. We did some good things and actually made some strides from last week.”
The loss drops Steamboat to 2-3 on the season. The Sailors next play at 7 p.m. at home Friday against Palisade.
