Caucuses offer grass-roots opportunity

— Local committees for the Republican and Democratic parties all over Colorado will be conducting precinct caucuses Tuesday.

Republicans and Democrats in Routt County will participate separate precinct caucuses to elect delegates to their respective county assemblies. Also at the caucuses, people can discuss issues with their neighbors and ask that they be brought forward to the county assemblies.

The Routt County commissioner elections are affected by the caucuses and assemblies. The county assemblies are critical to those candidates seeking to place their names directly on the ballot for the Aug. 8 primary election. In order for that to happen, they must get a minimum of 30 percent of the delegates’ votes at the assembly. Other candidates still have the opportunity to petition their way onto the primary ballot.

Incumbent Republican Nancy Stahoviak of Oak Creek has announced her intention to run again in District 1. Democrat Doug Monger is bidding to fill the District 2 seat being vacated by Ben Beall.

At the state level, Rep. Jack Taylor and Jim Barrows are competing for the Republican nomination for the Senate District 8 seat. Paul Ohri is running unopposed on the Democratic side.

Clark area rancher and former Steamboat Springs School Board President Jay Fetcher is seeking the state House District 56 seat being vacated by Taylor. On the Republican side, Bill Haight of rural Steamboat and Al White of Winter Park, are seeking the 56th seat.
