Two Steamboat properties in running for national ‘House of the Year’ poll

— Two Steamboat Springs luxury homes are being pitted against 50 others from across the country in the Wall Street Journal’s annual “House of the Year” contest.

Running Dec. 15 through Jan. 4, the poll asks readers to choose among “House of the Week” winners from the past year, which are each winners already after having been chosen from other “House of the Day” selections for a particular week over the past year.

The two Steamboat properties — a 9,200-square-foot custom home on Priest Creek Road and the Sky River Ranch, a home on 800 acres overlooking the Elk River Valley — are among five from Colorado.

“I think it’s pretty special for us,” said Brian Smith, a broker with Hall and Hall who is listing the Sky River Ranch. “I don’t think you saw two properties from Vail or Aspen or Telluride. I think it reflects the unique qualities of the properties around here.”

Smith said the Sky River Ranch is so named because the custom, 9,500-square-foot home on the property is perched on a hilltop above the Elk River, which runs through the property.

“The house is located up on a ridge above the cottonwood trees, so you’re looking down on the river and the valley,” Smith said. “A lot of times (with) river properties, you tend to be down on the river, which can be nice, but you generally don’t have a lot of the expansive views. The house is kind of in the sky above the river.”

Smith said the Wall Street Journal usually keeps up with Hall and Hall listed properties to look for contenders for the House of the Day feature on the publication website.

“Part of it is having really good inventory,” Smith said. “They seek us out and keep a good eye on our inventory.”

Listed since mid-2014, the Priest Creek Road home is listed by broker Chris Paoli, of the Paoli Group of Colorado Group Realty. Another home listed by Paoli gained attention earlier this month when it was featured on the home page of Yahoo!, generating more than 5 million views.

Paoli said both the Yahoo! feature and Wall Street Journal recognition are products of careful marketing strategies his team employs to promote luxury, high-end properties in new ways.

The Priest Creek Road home is unique due to its ability to house an extended family and still seem cozy with only a couple of people inside, Paoli said.

“It’s large in size and designed to accommodate lots of family, but it’s also designed really well so that a couple could live there on a single level,” Paoli said. “Great entertaining, but at the same time, it’s a warm place to call home.”

Paoli said he was pleased to see two properties from Steamboat included in a nationwide real estate poll.

“It’s pretty amazing that Steamboat is going to have two properties in the running,” he said. “Just one would be amazing.”
