Brita Horn: Clarifying recent article

Dear Editor:

A July 12 story in Steamboat Today reported that Routt County’s ability to receive payment from Peabody Energy Corp. for Peabody’s past-due property taxes depends on whether the Routt County treasurer files a proof of claim in Peabody’s bankruptcy case.

This is incorrect. Peabody’s motion for authority to pay property tax claims is available (for free) at kccllc.net/peabody/document/1642529160706000000000121.

The authority that Peabody seeks does not mention, depend upon or require filing a proof of claim. Proofs of claim for governmental entities are not required to be filed until Oct. 10.

In any event, Routt County’s claim for property taxes has already been filed.

Yours truly,

Brita Horn

Routt County treasurer
