Steamboat Mental Health named Soup Bowl beneficiary

— Steamboat Mental Health has been selected as the recipient for funds raised from this year’s sixth annual Soup Bowl Supper.

“With 16 really good applications to consider, it was a hard choice,” fundraiser chairwoman Deb Babcock said. “But our members felt that this organization had the most appealing use for the money we raise and is an organization that does not receive a lot of recognition for the good work it does in our community.”

Steamboat Mental Health will use the funds to update and refurnish a Family Therapy Room and waiting area. The work should make the rooms appealing for young children by using bright colors and child-sized furniture and providing new toys.

A date for the fall fundraiser has not been set.

“We will need to find a new location since we’re pretty sure the community center will not be available to us,” Babcock said.

The Soup Bowl Supper has raised more than $32,000 for area nonprofit organizations, including LIFT-UP of Routt County, Yampa Valley Recycles, Animal Assistance League of Northwest Colorado and Historic Routt County.

The event is organized by the Steamboat Clay Artisans, a group of local clay artists who get together to hold group sales, educational programs and other events. Members of Steamboat Clay Artisans will gather June 2 and 3 to make 300 soup bowls and two dozen large serving bowls for this year’s Soup Bowl Supper. Members of the public are invited to stop by Blue Sky Pottery on those days to watch the artists at work.
