Dear Neighbors, I’m Brent Romick, and I have proudly lived and worked in Routt County for nearly six decades. My diverse experience in all aspects of the real estate industry, private business owner, rancher, and board member for various local organizations has prepared me well for the role of County Commissioner for District I.

Routt County is facing significant challenges, including shortages in attainable housing and early childcare, inadequate road maintenance, and rising property taxes and inflation. These issues have made it increasingly difficult for young families to maintain their quality of life and consider staying in our community. While many young people are contemplating leaving, we must manage growth and development in a way that adds value to our communities and supports families in establishing their roots here.

As County Commissioner, I will initiate a program called Routt Roots to address housing shortages. There are numerous opportunities beyond Steamboat Springs to implement county zoning that accommodates a full spectrum of housing types for various income levels. By fostering public-private partnerships, we can enable young families to become homeowners and invest in their future in Routt County.

Happy, working families are essential to vibrant communities, and we must also ensure that parents have access to safe, affordable, and accessible childcare. Local businesses understand that working parents are most productive when they know their children are in good hands. I will collaborate with businesses, charitable organizations, and state agencies to provide the necessary resources for organizations like First Impressions to strengthen our childcare infrastructure.

Routt County continues to grow, especially with the upcoming developments proposed for Stagecoach. Some of these projects are quasi-judicial in nature, meaning that decisions cannot be predetermined and must be made impartially based on evidence and plans presented during the process. As county commissioner, I will ensure all aspects of the projects are carefully analyzed and align with the best interests of Routt County.

The potential expansion of the tax base may be significant. This could provide critical funding for essential services like housing, childcare, and transportation. These projects could include improvements to county roads, which is vital for ensuring safe and efficient access to designated growth centers, particularly with increased traffic. A strong commissioner with extensive experience can strike the proper balance to ensure that the project, if approved, enhances safety, and supports future growth, while maintaining environmental standards and preserving the region’s natural beauty.

Furthermore, we cannot overlook our transportation issues. I will support the establishment of a regional transportation authority to provide safe, reliable, and affordable public transit across Routt County. Currently, our roads and highways are congested due to 6,000 daily commuters traveling to and from Steamboat Springs. By enhancing our transportation infrastructure and implementing smart-growth planning, we can better accommodate housing, support local businesses, and expand economic opportunities.

Finally, with the imminent closure of the Xcel power plant in Hayden, we must carefully consider its replacement to mitigate the potential loss of half the local property tax base and high-paying jobs. My approach will be to prioritize clean, reliable, and affordable energy while preserving local jobs and minimizing impacts on wildlife habitats and natural resources.

With 45 years of experience dedicated to serving Routt County’s communities, I am committed to improving our land use policies, protecting our natural resources, and honoring our western heritage. I have the know-how and vision to help maintain and enhance what makes Routt County a gem of Colorado.

I hope to earn your support for County Commissioner on Nov. 5. Sincerely, Brent Romick.

Brent Romick is a candidate for Routt County Commissioner District 1.
