Brent Boyer: Explore Steamboat adds features
Throughout the next few weeks, I’ll be writing about a number of new editorial initiatives at the Steamboat Pilot & Today. Some, like the two-story front page, we’ve already adopted.
Today marks the first edition of an expanded Explore Steamboat weekend arts and entertainment section. Specifically, we’ve added local restaurant reviews and book reviews to a section that will continue to offer multiple arts stories, the most comprehensive entertainment calendar in the Yampa Valley, and movie reviews and listings.
We’ve long considered publishing restaurant reviews but struggled with how to do them fairly in a small town. We think we found the answer. The Steamboat Today has employed a Steamboat Springs resident with extensive experience in the culinary arts. Our reviewer will remain anonymous so he or she is ensured a dining experience typical to that of any patron who enters an eatery on any given day or night.
Our reviews aim to be unbiased and fair. Past experiences at a particular restaurant will be taken into account, when applicable. Restaurants will be rated on the quality of their food and service, as well as the overall experience. The typical cost of dining at each restaurant also will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the least expensive.
We know there’s high interest in dining in Steamboat Springs, and we hope our weekly restaurant reviews will help our readers — visitors and residents — make dining decisions. A well-written, fair critique makes for interesting reading. See our first review, of Cafe Diva. All reviews also will be posted at http://www.exploresteamboat.com.
You’ll find a book review by Steamboat resident Cody Heartz, who writes about James Galvin’s “The Meadow.” Heartz is a lover of the written word, and his reviews will appear every two weeks in Explore Steamboat. Although Heartz has a particular interest in writings about the American West, most of his reviews will focus on books of local or regional significance.
I hope you’re as excited about these two additions as we are. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at 970-871-4221 or email@example.com.
