Brenner, Otis appointed to partnership

— The Emerald Mountain Partnership expanded its board to nine people from seven to make room for qualified members at its meeting Monday in the Routt County Courthouse.

Ken Brenner, who was formally on the board as a Steamboat Springs City Council representative, was appointed to one of the new positions because he expressed an interest in remaining on the board even though he is no longer a councilman, partnership chairman Ben Beall said.

Susan Otis, executive director of the Yampa Valley Land Trust, was appointed to the other position.

“With her expertise with land transactions Susan will be valuable,” Beall said.

Also, Paul Strong was appointed to the board as a representative of the Steamboat Springs City Council, and Dan Smilkstein was reappointed.

The partnership is working to find a way to preserve the Emerald Mountain Parcel, a 6,345-acre piece of land managed by the Colorado State Land Board on Emerald Mountain. It was last appraised in 1999 for $17.2 million. The State Land Board intends to sell the land with hopes to gain maximum revenue on the project to support public education. The Emerald Mountain Partnership (acting on behalf of the community) has the first option to buy the land. The partnership has until March 15, 2004, to close the deal.
