Boys fourth, girls ninth in Glenwood Springs

The Soroco boys placed fourth, and the girls placed ninth at the Demon Invitational in Glenwood Springs on Saturday.

Hotchkiss won the girls’ team race convincingly, scoring 106 points, but the Rams boys were just 12 points from tying team winner Eagle Valley.

Eagle Valley and Soroco are growing accustomed to quality races against each other.

Eagle Valley’s Sean Matheson and Soroco’s Andy deGanahl have developed a rivalry of sorts, even though the schools are in different classes. Rams coach Gary Heide said Matheson has made it no secret he’s aiming to beat deGanahl in the 200 at least once this season.

The sophomore, who also is a top-notch 100 runner, has been unsuccessful.

In the West Grand Invitational on Tuesday and the Demon Invitational on Saturday, deGanahl was the winner, though he won by just 0.06 seconds in Glenwood.

“Andy won this one on guts,” Heide said. “This kid wanted to beat him. They were chest to chest the whole way, but Andy held him off.”

DeGanahl also won the 400 meters in 51.01.

Senior Kory Babcock picked up the triple jump title in Glenwood with a leap of 41 feet, 10 inches. He also placed fifth in the 200.

Trevor Ellis, Carl Remick, Babcock and deGanahl teamed up to win the 1,600-meter relay in 3:35.11. The next closest team, Delta, was more than four seconds behind.

“Kory passed three or four people,” Heide said. “They were about 20 yards ahead, and he buried them.”

Soroco’s 800-meter relay team took second and the 400-meter relay team was fifth.

On the girls’ side, the quartet of Melissa Roy, Nichole Wilson, Kyla Schmidt and Karli Babcock placed third in the 400-meter relay, fourth in the sprint medley and second in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:51.89.

“I was really pleased with the (800-meter relay),” Heide said. “The girls are looking strong, and I even believe there is room for improvement.”

Schmidt also placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14-10 1/2.
