Boys basketball team nets title berth

Christine Metz

— In its season opener, the Sailors boys basketball team pounded the West Grand Mustangs in a 74-47 win in Carbondale Friday at the Roaring Fork Tournament.

Although six of the Sailors scored in the double digits, Sailors coach Kelly Meek attributed the win to stellar defense. Senior Ryan Scheer led the way as he helped hold the Mustangs’ No. 1 threat, 6-foot-6, 220-pound James Holmes, to 10 points. Sailors point guard Jeff Aragon also chipped in with nine steals.

Coming into the game, Meek said his team needed to work on its rebounding. But with strong inside play from Alex Mackey and Cody Sherrill, the Sailors came down big on the boards.

The Sailors entered into halftime, 34-22, but blew past the Mustangs in the third period to jump out ahead by 25 points.

The Sailors will move on to the championship game at 7 p.m. today where they will play the winner of the Roaring Fork vs. Glenwood Springs game.
