Bob Enever: Lodging tax better option than sales tax

I admire Scott Ford’s lone “no” vote at Steamboat Springs City Council on the airline tax question. It is always hard to be the odd man out. In summary:

• There is a business benefit to having more visitors fly into patronage Steamboat Ski Area.

• A lodging tax would fall directly on the beneficiaries, the tourists.

• An increase in the sales tax, which the council is now proposing, will fall hardest on those with least income because they have to spend a larger percentage of their income on groceries.

City Council will have a public meeting on this sales tax proposal in July. If people opposed to the sales tax idea would show up, they could encourage council to switch to a lodging tax, which might defer the issue for a year but be a better solution for our community.
