Members scheduled to review report, budget Monday

Melinda Mawdsley

— While sorting through the details of a voter-approved elementary school construction project remains a top priority, it isn’t the only item of interest for the Steamboat Springs School Board.

On Monday, board members will review and discuss the district’s 2006 financial audit and management report and a proposed 2008 budget during a study session and special meeting.

School Board members also will discuss the status of Tier 1 and Tier 2 sports at Steamboat Springs High School.

Several months ago, the board asked high school Principal Mike Knezevich to do more research on Tier 1 and Tier 2 sports, including how much it would cost the district to fund all extracurricular student athletics.

Currently, the district fully funds Tier 1 sports such as football and basketball, but doesn’t fund Tier 2 sports such as softball and baseball.

“We just did some financial analysis of what the budgets currently are and what it would cost the district to be all Tier 1, which probably won’t happen,” Knezevich said. “If we were to take on all those sports, it would be $266,000 a year. We know that’s not reasonable.”

Steamboat High School offers 15 sports. That total counts sports offered to boys and girls – such as basketball – as one.

“The bottom line for our proposal is that (the district) could take on Tier 2 coaching salaries and transportation,” Knezevich said. “That could be done for about $40,000.”

The cost estimates aren’t finalized, but Knezevich said he wanted to provide board members with the figures they requested.

The School Board also has asked for a clear definition of why certain sports are Tier 1 and others are Tier 2.
