Board to discuss use of gym

Gymnasts, basketball players share space at old jr. high

Doug Crowl

— The Steamboat Springs School Board will discuss at its meeting tonight the use of the Eighth Street gym at the old junior high school by Steamboat Gymnastics and the city of Steamboat Springs’ children’s basketball program.

Steamboat Gymnastics owners Rose and Dan Atkins use the gym nine months out of the year but have to move all their equipment to the smaller gym on Seventh Street to give way for the basketball program for three months.

They are asking the board for a change.

Steamboat Gymnastics pays the school district $30,000 a year in rent, Rose Atkins said.

School board members also will interview candidates to fill the vacancy on the Technology Commission tonight.

Greg Hughey and Mary MacDougall are being interviewed to fill the spot left open by Ralph Cantafio last month.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. tonight and is at the George P. Sauer Human Services Center.
