Board looks for transportation director
The Hayden School District will be searching for a new transportation director to replace Bob Anderson, who resigned about three weeks ago after almost a year on the job.
The School Board plans to accept Anderson’s resignation during its meeting tonight.
Anderson declined to comment on his resignation.
The district has opened and closed a call for applicants but received little interest. District officials are hoping for more applications before the second deadline Friday.
“There have been more, but there still have not been as many applicants as we’d like,” Superintendent Mike Luppes said.
Although he didn’t know for sure, Luppes estimated the district has had 10 directors in the past 11 years. The largest factor contributing to the high turnover may be salary, he said.
“I don’t know that for sure, but for the skills required for the job and the pay we have, they can usually get paid more elsewhere,” Luppes said.
The transportation director’s responsibilities include maintaining the district’s buses and small vehicles, hiring and training drivers and scheduling drivers for activity trips. Ideally, candidates should be licensed mechanics, have bus-driving experience and be able to do bus inspections.
The starting salary is about $38,000, Luppes said.
Also at tonight’s School Board meeting, board members plan to hire a long-term substitute for Shelley Parker, a fifth-grade teacher at Hayden Valley Elementary School who recently had a baby.
The board will consider hiring Maggie Moore, who already is substituting for Parker, to teach the class until Parker returns from maternity leave at the beginning of February.
The board also plans to approve a state-required audit of its 2004 budget. An accountant from Craig was hired to conduct the audit and will review the results with the board, Luppes said.
The School Board meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the high school video conference room.
A group of parents working to establish a Hayden chapter of the Parent Teacher Association will hold a meeting Thursday to sign up members and elect officers.
The group has held several community meetings gauging residents’ interest in a local PTA. The second meeting attracted more than 20 people, more than expected, said Jill Altman, one of the parents organizing the meetings.
“The enthusiasm since then has been really positive and wonderful,” she said.
On Thursday, the group will focus on signing up members, who will be able to join the group free of charge.
Altman and others in the group arranged for membership fees to be covered by funds from the Box Tops for Education program, a General Mills fund-raiser providing 10 cents for each product box top sent to the company. Parent Kristin Russell also raised money by painting faces at a Hayden football game, Altman said.
Establishing a PTA board will be the final requirement to make the Hayden Valley PTA a charter of the state and national PTA organizations. Members will elect a president, who will be responsible for running meetings and setting agendas, an administrative vice president, a marketing vice president, one or two secretaries, a fund-raising coordinator and a historian, who will keep track of pictures and news clippings involving the group.
Any member may be elected to the board.
After officers are elected and the charter is established, the group plans to begin determining which projects and programs it wants to pursue, Altman said.
“After Christmas break, that’s when we’ll really delve into ideas, goals and fund raising,” she said.
Everyone in Hayden is invited to join the PTA, including parents, teachers, school administration and community members. Residents do not have to have children to be involved.
