Steamboat to host first 24-hour race this summer

Melinda Mawdsley

Mountain-biking enthusiasts looking for an endurance test won’t have to leave Steamboat Springs to find it this summer.

Steamboat’s first 24-hour race is coming to the Steamboat Ski Area, courtesy of the newly formed Rocky Peak Productions LLC and the three die-hard, mountain bikers who formed it.

Katie Lindquist and Brad Cusenbary, mountain-bike racers, and Gretchen Sehler, the organizer for the popular summer Town Challenge series, have spent their nights putting together the 24 Hours of Steamboat, which will be staged from noon June 12 through noon June 13 at the Steamboat Ski Area.

“I think it will be a lot of fun,” Lindquist said. “We’re trying to make Steamboat a biking destination and not just a ski town.”

The course has not been finalized, but Lindquist said bikers likely would use the Why Not and Zig Zag trails to climb and Huffmans and Valley View trails to descend back to the base camp.

“It is a lot of climbing for a 24-hour race,” Lindquist said.

But the appeal for many is the chance to experience this type of race with friends and teammates. While some racers, including Lindquist, compete solo, it is more common to form a team to tackle the challenging course.

People can compete solo or in teams of two, tandem, four, five or corporate, which is six racers or more. Early registration is $100 per biker and is open until April 30. The price increases after that date.

Updated information and registration forms are available at Race organizers are accepting forms only by mail.

Race organizers also are in search of a title sponsor for this event, the only scheduled 24-hour mountain bike race this summer in Colorado.

The title sponsor will have to commit to at least $1,000, Lindquist said, but Rocky Peak Productions will offer the title sponsorship to the highest bidder. The deadline to submit a bid is March 10.
