Big Battle matchup looms for Sailors

— After a loss Saturday, the Steamboat Springs High School boys lacrosse team is 2-3 on the season, and its three losses have come by one goal each.

That doesn’t have the squad down, however, as they head into a big league matchup at 4 p.m. Thursday at home against Battle Mountain.

Steamboat lost last weekend at Golden, 9-8, then again Saturday at Windsor, 7-6.

“It’s not the worst thing that can be happening to our team right now,” coach Jay Lattimore said. “We have a young core, so we expect to have some tough games, but they’ve been getting better every game. They had a great game at Windsor — one of the best they’ve played.”

Davis Petersen led Steamboat with two goals and two assists in that game. Jacob Gilbertson had two goals and an assist while Tallak Myhre had one goal and one assist.

Max Lynch had the team’s final goal while Peter Wharton racked up 13 saves in goal.

“We had quite a few penalties. Our man-down unit played great, which was really nice to see, but they just beat us,” Lattimore said. “Experience builds confidence, and these guys are building a lot of that confidence through these close games. That will really help in the second half of the season.”

Battle Mountain is 0-5 so far this season but did hand Steamboat its only league loss last year, an 11-10 overtime game.
