Best of the Boat: Best General Contractor/Home Builder — Fox Construction
This year’s Best of the Boat award winner for general contracting has done everything from removing a cumbersome, view-obstructing post in the Chief Theater to building an impressive addition onto the Holy Name Catholic Church. It also worked with the city to remodel the historic Centennial Hall, which today is home to city council meetings; recently finished an addition for Rocky Mountain Youth Corp.’s headquarters; and is wrapping up a renovation of the Steamboat Mountain School.
Tom and Karen Fox started Fox Construction in 1980, and numerous dream homes have been built along the way. Green building practices have been a longtime priority for the company, which has Routt County’s first LEED-accredited professional in CEO Sarah Fox, Tom and Karen’s daughter. The company built the Steamboat Springs Community Center to LEED standards, and has employed its environmental expertise on numerous other projects in town as well.
“We always entertain that as an option for clients,” says Sarah, whose company has between 20 to 40 full-time employees.
As for its projects, Sarah says the workload balances out to about half residential and half commercial, “depending on the year.” But at the heart of every project is their stamp of approval.
“I think our success owes itself to treating all of our customers’ projects as if they were our own,” she says. “We’re open and transparent, and maintain good record keeping and billing so our customers are confident with how their dollars are being spent and how the project is being managed.”
After restoring the historic Moore Barn, Fox also recently stabilized the iconic Arnold Barn near the Steamboat Ski Area that was in danger of collapse. It was also recently tasked with moving it to its new home at the base of Mount Werner Circle — where it will serve as a beacon of our community just as the company does.
