— The city of Steamboat Springs on Wednesday identified the pilot involved in a crash Tuesday at Steamboat Springs Airport as Ben Wilcox.

Wilcox was not injured after the plane he was flying landed without its landing gear down at about 12:30 p.m. He was the only person in the plane, which has substantial damage.

It is thought that Wilcox forgot to put down the landing gear on the Cessna 182 Skylane, which is one of three planes owned by the Steamboat Flying Club.

Wilcox did not return a message Wednesday seeking comment.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Terry Williams said Wednesday that the agency was gathering information and investigating the crash.

Steamboat Flying Club President Bob Maddox said Tuesday that Wilcox was an experienced pilot and had logged many hours in the plane.

Wilcox works in the construction industry and uses his club membership to fly on business to Arizona, Denver and small airports in rural Wyoming, according to a Jan. 14, 2012, story in the Steamboat Today.
