Battle expected in adult hockey finals

A single point is all that separated Backdoor Sports/Team Mad Dog from Minglewood in this year’s Sunday night adult hockey league.

“This is one of the most competitive leagues we’ve ever had,” league organizer Peter Van De Carr. “Things were close from start to finish.”

So when the playoffs open Sunday, Van De Carr and most of the teams in the league are expecting a hard-fought road to the league title.

First-place Backdoor (9-2-4) will face off against fourth-place Westside Auto (2-11-1), and second-place Minglewood (9-3-3) will square off against third-place KFMU (5-7-3) in the one-game first round. The winners will advance to play a three-game series March 7, 10 and 11.

“It’s going to be pretty exciting this year,” Van De Carr said. “Every team in this league is capable of winning.”

The playoffs will wrap up play in Steamboat’s adult “A” league, which began back in November. Van De Carr prefers call the group the Sunday Night Game — a reference to a corny hockey film in which the players in a small Alaskan town met once a week, on Sundays, for a game.

This year, 56 players took part in the Steamboat league and Van De Carr said the performance on the ice has been some of the best he has seen during his eight years as captain on the Back Door Sports Team and several years as the league’s director.

Registration for the spring adult hockey league, which is open to all ability levels, is under way and continues through March 5. Call 871-1152 to sign up.
