Baseball fundraiser set for Tuesday

Steamboat Springs — Baseball season is well underway around the country and even for a few Steamboat Springs teams. The season is coming hard for Steamboat itself, too, and Tuesday, the local youth league organization, Yampa Valley Youth Baseball, will host a fundraiser to help prepare.
The group is putting on an event at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at E3 Chophouse in Steamboat Springs that will include dinner — $45 for adults and $25 for kids 14 and younger — and a silent auction.
“We’ve got a couple fly fishing trips, tickets to the Rockies and some gift certificates to restaurants,” said Jarett Duty. “Basically anything I could beat out of anyone in town, I did.”
For Duty and the local U13 team he coaches, the Northwest Colorado Storm, the season’s already rolling. The squad’s racked up two dominating performances already in Triple Crown tournaments, paving the way for the group to again play in this year’s Triple Crown World Series in Steamboat.
The action for that squad started in March, when it went 5-0 at a Denver tournament March 12 and 13.
The Storm outscored their opponents 63-5 over the weekend. The team hit 0.520 and had an ERA of 1.043. Austin Ibarra, with four triples and a home run, and Alan Duty, with 10 RBIs, led the team hitting. Liano Canejo and Duty helped lead the way pitching.
Playing April 2 and 3 at a another tournament earlier this month, the team was equally dominant, this time blasting past opponents by an overall score of 56-4.
The team again hit well, posting a 0.509 batting average and was even better pitching, finishing with a 0.300 ERA.
Winning that tournament earned the team the spot in the Triple Crown World Series, the second consecutive year the same group has earned that honor.
“This team, they’ve been playing together now since they were 10, and they started by getting their butts kicked in every tournament,” Jarett Duty said. “They stuck with it, though.”
