Bantam A team rolls to wins over Air Force

— After bagging a couple of wins over Air Force last weekend, the Steamboat Springs Bantam A team is busy preparing to host Denver Country Club this weekend in Steamboat.

That game will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena.

The local bantams will be riding high after collecting 3-2 and 8-3 wins over the Air Force Falcons in Colorado Springs Saturday.

Nathan Rothe’s first-period goal (assisted by Tanner Grimes and Todd Mistr) helped the Steamboat team stay neck and neck with Air Force through two periods.

In the third, Nick Pruett broke a 1-1 tie after getting an assist from Dusty Atkinson and Chris Baumann. But once again the Falcons rallied to tie the score.

The Steamboat team finally secured the win when Atkinson was able to secure the game-winning goal late in the third after getting an assist from Baumann.

On Sunday, the same two teams took to the ice. But this time Steamboat scored just 39 seconds into the game when Pruett beat the Air Force goalkeeper after getting an assist from Brad Bonner.

The Braves offense exploded en route to the 8-3 win.

Additional first-period goals came from Bonner, Ryan Brees and Baumann. Sam Gary assisted the Baumann score.

Bonner netted another goal to open the second with a goal. Gary and Pruett added goals in the second and assists came from Daniel Coloccia and Bonner. Pruett added another goal midway through the third period to complete the scoring.

Clay McKenzie and Nate Coram also had strong games and Randy Rule was solid at the net, giving up just three goals in the blowout.
