Steamboat Springs snowboader Nik Baden punched his ticket to the mens slopestyle finals of the U.S. Open on Wednesday, setting up the chance to ride to score high at one of the biggest events in his sport Friday.

Baden logged a score of 77.25 in Wednesday’s qualifying round, placing him 10th and among the riders to advance to the event’s finals. Canada’s Mark McMorris was the top qualifier. He earned a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Neither of Pyeongchang’s other two medalists qualified for finals. Silver medalist Max Parrot was 16th, and Silverthorne-based gold medalist Red Gerard was 20th.

Steamboat Springs’ Arielle Gold, coming off a bronze medal performance in Pyeongchang, didn’t land a run Thursday in the women’s halfpipe qualifying round and placed 17th. She won’t advance to Saturday’s finals.
