Two people from Rocky Ford died when the semi-truck they were in rolled Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass.

According to the Routt County coroner, Bernardo Rodrigues Aldapa, 51, and April Elizabeth Baca, 40, both from Rocky Ford, died in the crash.

The wreck involved only the semi and was reported between County Road 20 and Forest Service Road 296, seven miles east of Steamboat Springs at mile marker 143.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the semi was westbound on U.S. 40 when the driver went around a corner and lost control. The truck rolled onto the driver’s side and jackknifed. Both passengers were ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

A CSP spokesperson said investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the wreck but do suspect excessive speed was a factor.
