Athletes into the action at Nordic Junior Nationals

— A third-place finish from Gretchen Burkholder helped lead the way for Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes competing at the United States Ski and Snowboard Association Junior Nordic Skiing National Championships at Stowe, Vt.

Burkholder was third in the junior women’s 16-17 division of a 5-kilometer classic skiing race.

Other top finishes came from Lars Hannah, fourth in the men’s 16-17 division in a 10K classic race, Kathleen O’Connell, seventh in the women’s 14-15 division of the 5K classic, Jordan Floyd, 13th in that same race, and Cara Piske, 12th in the women’s 18-19 division of the 5K classic race.

Floyd backed up her strong result with another in a classic sprint race Wednesday. She finished seventh, winning the B Finals race. Evan Weinman, O’Connell, Hannah, Piske and Burkholder each made the semifinals of their age divisions in the classic sprint race.

Two more events in the championships remain. A mass start skate skiing race awaits Friday, and a team relay skate skiing event is set for Saturday.
