Allison Tate: 2A, 2B not new tax
November 2, 2008
Steamboat Springs — For the past 15 years, our schools have depended on revenue from the half-cent sales tax for education. This tax is nothing new; it has been in place since 1993 and has funded many wonderful programs from which our students have benefited greatly.
Smaller class size, school-based mentors and counselors, the Steamboat Youth Orchestra, educational aides for gifted and talented students and those with special needs, and the Yampa Valley Science School are a few of these programs. Spanish language instruction in the primary schools also is among the programs funded by this tax. Each year, the number of Spanish-speaking residents in our community and nation increases. Spanish language instruction in the elementary schools is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity. People who study a foreign language at a young age are more receptive to that knowledge and are much more likely to retain the language.
Steamboat Springs is a high-performing school district thanks to this tax. Did you know about 70 percent of the money collected from this sales tax comes from tourists? The half-cent sales tax adds up to 1 cent on a $2 purchase, only a nickel on a $10 purchase. That’s a small price to pay for our schools. Please renew the half-cent sales tax for education. Vote “yes” on 2A and 2B.
