Steamboat Gymnastics Center ready for exhibition

Melinda Mawdsley

Walking into the Steamboat Gymnastics Center is like having your morning cup of coffee. Because however weary and tired you think you are, caffeine — or energetic children — seems to remedy the problem.

Saturday, the center is hosting its annual exhibition show, and if this year’s exhibition is anything like those staged in recent years, spectators will be treated to a high level of gymnastics and entertainment.

“This show gives us a chance to be more creative and free,” coach Deirdre Bernard said.

More than 40 boys and girls of all ages will take part in this year’s show, which includes feature performances from the gym’s highest-level female competitors and team routines from the newly formed boys’ team.

“We wanted to give these kids a place to show off their talent,” boys coach Dan Atkins said.

The Steamboat gymnasts have to travel to competitions in the Front Range or in Grand Junction, so the opportunity for friends, family and fans to come out and watch them in an exhibition format can be exciting.

“This town only sees our gymnastics once a year, so it’s neat to see the connection between the two,” Bernard said.

The show is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at the Steamboat Gymnastics Center at the corner of Eighth and Pine streets. The doors open at 6:45 p.m., and tickets can be purchased from a gymnast, at the center’s office or at the door before the exhibition.

Proceeds from the meet go toward the Steamboat Gymnastics Center.

The following teams will be performing Saturday night: The pre-beginners, sparks/pre-team, Level 5 training team, boys team, Level 5 team, competition team and the tumble team.

Optional level gymnasts Genna Bradley, Jaime Winter, Rochelle Johnson and Katie Birch will be featured in the competition, as well.

Bradley took sixth on the floor and 13th on the vault at the state meet earlier this month.

Bradley, Johnson and Winter teamed up to take 5th out of 12 teams at their first Level 7 competition as a team Feb. 27 in Grand Junction.
