Advisory committee discusses base area improvement projects slated for 2014

A plan to reconstruct the historic Butterfly Barn near the entrance of Steamboat Ski Area was one of the base area projects in the design phase this year.

— The base area's Urban Renewal Authority Advisory Committee on Thursday resolved to look into the possibility of converting a U.S. Highway 40 overpass into a more welcoming and attractive structure.

The committee voted to recommend allocating $5,000 toward preliminary planning to see what could be done to the facade of the concrete overpass over Mount Werner Road.

Early suggestions include some sort of stonework or covering that would make it a new entry sign on the way to Steamboat Ski Area.

The funding allocation was the highlight of a quick meeting of the advisory committee that helps to oversee the funding of improvements at the base of the ski area.

Details were the theme of the gathering.

Committee members also discussed some new ski area wayfinding signs planned for U.S. 40 and committed to move forward with the planning for the construction or relocation of a barn on the Knoll Open Space.

One possibility includes moving the historic Butterfly Barn from its current resting place at the Meadows Parking Lot up the hill to serve as an iconic entryway to the ski area.

Many approvals on the project, including the sale of the barn, still are pending.

Tax increment financing at the base area has funded several big projects in recent years, headlined by the base area promenade.

More recently, URAAC worked with the city to fund median improvements on U.S. 40.

Its list of projects approved for this year is worth about $208,974.

The funding request for the overpass design will have to be sent back to the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority for approval.
