A 52-year-old Craig man is dead after the car he was riding in rolled over Sunday evening on Moffat County Road 18, north of Craig.

Dennis Otis was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release.

Dennis Otis’s son, Logan Otis, 20, was driving the vehicle and was wearing his seat belt. He was not injured.

Shortly after the accident, Logan Otis was arrested and booked into Moffat County Jail.

He has been charged with driving under the influence, vehicular homicide, driving under restraint, careless driving and illegal possession of alcohol, Moffat County Sheriff KC Hume confirmed Monday morning.

“If there’s one message I could send to young people, because there’s young people in this town, it’s see what alcohol can do for you,” said Wendy Otis, mother of Logan Otis. “I will be there to support my son through everything that happens. I hope that God and everybody willing will understand that this is a young person’s mistake.”

Wendy and Dennis Otis were divorced in 2010, and Logan Otis was living with his mother while working at Walmart in Craig.

Logan Otis was driving a 2002 Ford Focus sedan north on Moffat County Road 18 when the car traveled into a left curve in the roadway and began to rotate counter clockwise, the news release stated.

“It then traveled off the left side of the roadway onto a slight grass embankment and began to roll,” the news release stated. “During the rollover sequence, the passenger was ejected.”

Alcohol and speed were suspected to be factors in the crash.

Wendy Otis said her son rarely spent time with his father. Since the crash, she has talked to him on the phone.

“He’s very upset. Very upset,” she said.

Logan Otis enjoyed snowboarding and attended Colorado Mountain College last year in Leadville where he studied ski area operations, but he left college and moved back to Craig.

“The Colorado State Patrol reminds all drivers that it takes two seconds for safety when you make the decision to buckle your seat belt. This crash is a strong reminder of the lifesaving abilities of seat belts,” the news release stated.
