4-H clubs raise nearly $36,000

Money will help fund new building at fairgrounds

— The Routt County 4-H Council collected nearly $35,960 through fund-raisers for a new multipurpose building at the Routt County Fairgrounds that will be the county’s only indoor showing arena.

The 4-H Council set a goal in January to raise money to help the Routt County Fair Board fund the new building. The numerous clubs in the county collaborated to raffle off a Dodge Dakota 4×4 Quad Cab pickup, as well as a paid trip to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, at the Routt County Fair in August. Individual clubs held penny drives, a car wash and bake sale to help raise the money, while the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. pitched in a donation.

“It is obvious that the efforts and help of a lot of different people from 4-H members, leaders and parents to individuals and businesses in Routt County have made this lofty goal reachable,” 4-H reporter Tucker Louthan said.

Routt County Fair Board member Byron Dean said the 4-H donation is important on two levels.

“Emotionally, it is extremely important because it shows the support of the kids,” Dean said. “Financially, every little bit helps.”

Though final figures haven’t been determined, the board estimates the cost of the new building will be about $200,000.

The 4-H Council estimated 350 head of sheep, swine, goats and llamas and more than 70 head of beef can fit into the arena, and the two show rings will conveniently house the Junior Livestock Sale during the Routt County Fair. The board is aiming for summer 2002 for the building’s completion, Dean said.
