3 youth hockey teams will head to state tournament

— The Steamboat Springs Youth Hockey Association advanced three teams to the state playoffs.

The Bantam A, Squirt B and Pee Wee A teams all advanced to the state playoffs that begin this Saturday.

The Bantam A team went 2-2, the Squirt B team went 3-2 and the Pee Wee A team went 3-1 over the weekend in their league playoffs to advance.

The Bantam B, Pee Wee B and Squirt C teams all went 1-2 over the weekend and failed to make the state playoffs.

“We feel confident with playing any of the Front Range teams,” Squirt B coach Greg Kmetz said. “We’ve been in three tournaments where we played all their teams.”

The Squirt B team opens up at 10:30 a.m. Saturday against DU at the Apex Ice Arena in Denver.

The Bantam A team plays the Littleton Red team at 10 a.m. Saturday, and the Pee Wee A team plays the Boulder White team at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both those games are at the Edge West Ice Arena in Littleton.

“As I’ve told the kids, we haven’t peaked yet,” Bantam A coach Bob Milne said. “We’re one of those teams that started slow and kept getting better and better. I don’t think we’ve seen their best hockey yet.”
