3 teens arrested after assault at Howelsen Hill

— A fight at Howelsen Hill early Friday evening sent one teen to the hospital and three others to jail.

Shortly after 5 p.m., Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of four males seen leaving an assault.

Officers met with the 19-year-old victim, who said he was sitting at the BMX track when four males jumped out. The victim said he was beat up after the teens asked if he had any marijuana, and he said he did not, officer Bill Stucker said.

He said after the attack, the victim said the teens took his cellphone and marijuana.

Officers went to Colorado Mountain College and arrested three suspects on felony charges.

Daniel R. Bowling, 19, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.

John C. Lersch, 18, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and aggravated robbery. Bernard L. Yannelli, 19, was arrested on the same charges.

The victim was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and underwent surgery for a broken jaw, Stucker said.
