3 people ejected, but no serious injuries in rollover crash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Five people are lucky to be alive following a rollover crash in South Routt County on Friday.

Three of the people inside the car were ejected during the crash, but there were no serious injuries.

The crash occurred between Oak Creek and Yampa and was reported shortly after 3 p.m.

A 2012 Nissan Rogue driven by 21-year-old Brenda Lopez was headed northbound on Colo. Highway 131, when Lopez lost control and went off the right side of the road near mile marker 36.

Lopez and her four passengers were headed to Steamboat from Denver.

Colorado State Patrol investigated the crash.

Corporal Jason Shimp said everyone involved in the crash was between 20 and 28 years old.

CSP does not know what caused Lopez to drive off the road, but neither drugs nor alcohol impairment were suspected.

She was cited for careless driving causing injury.

Lopez and her front seat passenger might have had bones broken during the crash.

Everyone was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center, but nobody needed to be flown to Denver.

The road was dry at the time of the crash.

No one inside the car was wearing a seatbelt.

“It just reinforces to wear a seatbelt while in operation of a motor vehicle,” Shimp said.
