2019 Best of the Boat radio station: KBCR/Big Country Radio 96.9

At KBCR Big Country Radio, the concept is simple: Give the people what they want.
General Manager Brian Harvey says the station’s success can be attributed to its community involvement. It sponsors a wealth of local events and fundraisers, including the Routt County Fair and Rotary’s Cornhole Classic, Barn Dance, Lobster Fest and Redball Express. It also sponsors and broadcasts events such as the 20K Day and Impact Day for United Way, and annual Cowboy Roundup Days Rodeo and Fourth of July Parade.
Its programming includes award-winning news with Shannon Lukens, High School Sports Roundup, Colorado Sports Wrap, Road Report, weather and snow reports and more.
Between songs, local DJs present local news, sports and upcoming community events — something unique to small-town radio. And it’s this link to the community that makes it so successful.
“People are still attracted to their local radio,” Harvey says. “As long as we’re making it accessible and free, we’ll continue to be viable. And I couldn’t imagine a better town to be based in.”
