2 Steamboat residents complete grueling races

Ben Ingersoll

— Although they raced nearly 1,200 miles from each other, a pair of Steamboat Springs residents crossed finish lines in a few of the most grueling races offered on American soil.

Diane Carter, 66, took on the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, completing the 26.2 miles in 5 hours, 23 minutes and 19 seconds. Carter, who was running to help support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on behalf of friend Dr. Matt Dudley, finished with a 12:33-per-mile pace.

Carter was one of 567 runners representing Colorado in the race from Staten Island to Central Park. In her 15th marathon, Carter finished 39th in the female ages 65 to 69 division.

In Panama City Beach, Fla., Mike Schlichtman competed in the Ironman Florida triathlon Friday.

Ironman Florida features a 2.4-mile swim in a two-loop course in the Gulf of Mexico. Athletes then transition to a 112-mile, one-loop bicycle course before finishing with a 26.2-mile, two-loop run course through local neighborhoods, the distance of a standard marathon.

Schlichtman finished in 11:03:18 in 30th in the male ages 50 to 54 division. Nearly 3,000 triathletes took on the race. He completed the swim course in 1:10:59, the bike course in 5:10:10 and the run course in 4:29:36.
