1940 Oscar-winning ‘Grapes of Wrath’ to screen at library

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Bud Werner Memorial Library presents a free community screening of “The Grapes of Wrath,” the 1940 movie based on John Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in Library Hall.

Nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, “The Grapes of Wrath” was among the first 25 films selected by the National Film Preservation Board to be preserved in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1989, the first year selections were made. Winner of two Oscars — Best Director for John Ford and Best Supporting Actress for Jane Darwell — this American classic follows Tom Joad, played by Henry Fonda, and his family as they escape the Depression-era Oklahoma dust bowls for the promised land of California.
