1 hurt, 30 feet of guardrail destroyed

— A Hayden man was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and careless driving after running into a guardrail on U.S. Highway 40 on Wednesday morning.

Robert Josiah Barron, 24, was traveling eastbound on U.S. 40 near the private road to Coal View Ghost Ranch when he veered off the right side of the road, the Colorado State Patrol reported. Barron’s 1996 Chevrolet pickup reportedly went across the ranch’s private entrance and collided head-on with a guardrail.

The truck continued traveling eastbound and rotated a quarter-turn clockwise, collapsing almost 30 feet of guardrail in the process. The pickup came to a stop on its wheels, partially on top of the guardrail and facing south, according to police reports.

The passenger, Pepe J. Barron, 23, had injuries to his leg and back. He was treated at the scene by a West Routt ambulance squad and transported by ambulance to Yampa Valley Medical Center, the report stated.

The accident was reported at 7:10 a.m. and the West Routt Fire Protection District and Routt County Sheriff’s Office assisted Colorado State Patrol at the scene.

Both men were wearing seat belts. The driver, Robert Barron, was not injured.

Robert Barron was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, careless driving possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana.

He was booked into the Routt County Jail and released on $750 bond Wednesday.
